River Forest homes sit on wide lots with deep setbacks, which means the address has to be readable from farther back than in most suburbs. That is exactly the problem an 8 by 16 inch carved stone solves and a four inch brass number does not. The village's brick and stone houses, many of them from the same era and architects as Oak Park's, already carry carved detail at the entry, so the marker matches what is there.
We install one thing and only one thing: an 8 inch by 16 inch marker cut from limestone 3 inches thick, with the numbers deep-carved into the face, set permanently into the brick of the house. The price is $700 to $750 installed in River Forest and covers the stone, the carving, the masonry work and the cleanup.

No. The opening is cut cleanly to size and the stone is set with proper masonry technique, the same way lintels and sills have been set in brick walls for a century. The finished install is weather-tight.
One visit of a few hours. The stone is carved ahead of time, so installation day is only the masonry work.
